We are proud to announce that the City of Wanneroo Bird Viewing Platform at Lake Joondalup was nominated for and won a Commendation award in the category ‘Small Projects Award’ by the jury nominated to select works of special merit in Small Projects Architecture in the WA chapter for those projects meeting the conditions of the Australian Institute of Architects in the year 2026.
The Bird Viewing Structure enriches the way the community lives, learns, and connects with nature by providing a safe, inclusive, and immersive place to experience the wetland environment. Designed for universal access, the structure enables people of all ages and abilities to observe birdlife and seasonal changes in the lake while remaining protected from sensitive habitats. Integrated interpretation supports environmental education and cultural awareness, strengthening understanding of the site’s ecological and Aboriginal significance. By thoughtfully balancing access with conservation, the project encourages passive recreation, supports wellbeing, and fosters stewardship of a unique natural landscape.
